Lesson Description: This lesson will aim to broaden students science and technology vocabulary for this unit and collaboratively dress a mannequin for different daily and seasonal changes.
Minds On: To engage the students, the teacher will introduce the students to the life-size mannequin and create a brainstorming web on anchor chart paper. The teacher will ask the students a variety of questions about how we can appropriately dress this mannequin for different times of the day, different seasons and different activities. The teacher will record the students responses on the board.
Action: The students will then choose one of the brainstormed ideas and work with their science partner to design the perfect outfit for the mannequin based on their conditions. The students will be given a piece of anchor chart paper where they can write or draw their ideas. As this is taking place, the teacher will circulate from pair to pair and engage in meaningful talk with the students. The teacher will model pulling out key vocabulary essential to this unit: investigate, temperature, hibernate, dormant, energy, and survival.
Consolidation: To consolidate learning, each pair will present their new findings to their classmates by explaining their ideas and dressing the mannequin for their condition. As pairs are presenting, the teacher will pause and allow other pairs to engage in think-pair-shares about the new vocabulary they are learning. All new terminology will be added to the classroom word wall.
