Social Media Influence on News Reporting
What ethical issues were raised by the article
Articles published before fact checking can be done
Publishers basing their articles on other publications rather than fact
Your reaction to the ethical issues raised by the information in the article
It's more important now in the age of the internet and fast media that reporting be fact-checked. Think of the damage that could be done to a family or business or any other body really. You could tank a business by erroneously reporting it's CEO dead for example. people start selling their stock in fear and the company's whole valuation tanks.
I understand why it would be appealing to just respond to your competitors. They are after all the ones that could potentially take away readership from you, but just responding in kind and not checking your own articles and responses just involves you in a viscous cycle that makes everyone look bad when something goes wrong.
Play devils advocate, what opposing view could be expressed
If you believe your competitors to be trustworthy, why not follow their lead? After all, they haven't been wrong often before, right?
What is the probability that our competitors are wrong this time?
Speed is the biggest issue to overcome, you can be faster if you use other's work to complete your own
How many readers will we loose if we don't have a timely response to this matter?
What is your opinion about the issue, and what caused you to form that opinion
Articles should always be fully fact checked before being published
As someone who is critical of capitalism generally, the idea of a company, that is relied upon by so many to be informed, doing something for financial reasons rather than from a sense of ethical purpose in informing their reader-base of an event or issue, abhorrent.
I understand the need to make money, but that can be balanced by showing the public you can be the most balanced ethical reporter of news.
Reliable is so much better than fast. Period.
How could using a balance in research and reporting tactics have made a difference in the outcome of what was reported
If they had just taken a moment to contact local media to fact check, they could have easily been someone to come out on top in the media dog-pile to release information.
It was reported that local media sources had more information due to connections to other local organizations. I would imagine this is true in most cases. So having it be a rule of thumb to at minimum check with a local source before publishing, seems like a simple solution
If you can't get a hold of someone from a local media source, see if anyone you work with has any local connections.
Maybe Bob from accounting's cousin is on the police in the area or some similar connection.
