Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmarks are used to gather data to determine where the student is at academically while predicting where the student will be in the future.
Example : Standardized test : Students will be required to complete a test provided by the state in which they reside to determine how much the students have learned and what area's they will need extra help in the future with.
Example : District assessment : Students complete a test provided by the district at the end of the six week's to gauge where a student is at academically based on what they learned that six weeks.
Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment determines what a students strengths and weaknesses are before receiving any instruction.
Example : Pre-test : Students will be given a test before learning about the topic. The test will allow the educator to understand what the student already knows about the topic and what they can do to further their learning. This test is not graded.
Example : KWL : Students will complete a KWL graphic organizer over a given topic that the student is going to learn about.

Formative
Definition: A formative assessment allows the educator to monitor student learning in order to adjust student performance after providing feedback.
Example : Exit Slips : Students write one take away from class on a sticky note and put it on the board.
Examples : Think, Pair, Share : The students are presented with a question given the topic of the lesson. They are then asked to think about it for a few seconds. Then they are asked to share their thoughts with their partner.
Summative
Definition: A summative assessment allows the educator to evaluate what a student was able to learn and what they did not learn by the end of a unit.
Example : Project : Students are expected to create a project that reflects all of that they have learned throughout the unit.
Example : Research Papers : Students are asked to complete a research paper over the topic they have been learning about throughout the whole unit.
