Sound Waves
DOPPLER EFFECT
When a source of sound is moving
toward an observer, the pitch the observer hears is higher than when the source is at
rest; and when the source is traveling away from the observer, the pitch is lower. This
phenomenon is known as the Doppler effect1 and occurs for all types of waves.

However, it should be noted that the effect does not occur as a result of the actual change in the frequency of the wave source. The Doppler effect can be observed in both sound waves and light waves.

Superposition and Beats
The beating is heard as low-frequency variation in the volume of the sound. The maxima and minima which produced the beats are caused by constructive and destructive interference of sound waves of the same amplitude but of slightly different frequencies.
A maximum occurs when sound from both sources arrives a t our ear exactly in phase and a minimum is formed when they are out of phase.
