Megacities develop due to rural-urban migration and natural increase. Migration tends to move to large cities, so cities can experience rapid population growth.

World citeis are usually dominated by international trade and regional economies. They are homes to world-renowned universities.

Counterurbanisation is the movement of people out of the city to surrounding villages and settlements.
It is occurring because as urbanistion increases, there is less space in the city. Also improvement to transport links mean people can live further away and commute to work,

1950- 30% of people lived in urban areas. 2014- over 50% lived in towns and cities.
The most urbanised areas are in North America and in Europe, and the least urbanised areas are in Africa and Asia.
