Key words
Core and Periphery Core: Economic centre of the country – higher growth and development, better education, more employment.
In the UK, the core is London and the South-East
Periphery: lower income, lower employment, fewer young people (leave to work in cities).
Poverty: is a state of being extremely poor. Lacking the usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions.
Bottom-up Development
Micro-hydro: A type of hydroelectric power that produces electricity using the natural flow of water. These installations can provide power to an isolated home or small community. (Micro hydro schemes are those with a generating capacity under 100KW.)
Development is often defined by how wealthy a country is - economic development.
But money doesn’t tell you what the quality of life is like for the people. Economic development also doesn’t tell you how good/bad the environment is.
