- on the whole the church seems to have fulfilled the requirements of the bulk of people to whom it ministered
- 1530s major change - break with Rome, Henry became head of the church - there were executions of those who denied the royal supremacy, most notably Sir Thomas More
- monasteries were an important feature of the Pre-reformation church but Cromwells dissolution of the monasteries beginning in 1536 attacked many traditional practices of Catholicism - most notable consequence being the pilgrimage of grace in 1536
- the expense of Henry's warlike foreign policy led to the widespread sale of the church and monastic property
- many monasteries had been noted for their educational purposes, most monastic schools were lost, many monks and nuns were rendered unemployed, some monasteries played a role in communities - offering employment and business opportunities

- came in to fund a foreign war
- occurred in north Essex and South Suffolk - dukes of Norfolk and Suffolk were faced with 4000 taxation resisters, in particular unemployed cloth workers who found it impossible to pay the levy
- the dukes handled the matter sensitively and the King backed down
- Wolsey publicly had ato appologise and release the leaders of the resistance from prison
- demonstrated that Henry could not operate in the defiance of tax paying classes
