- - - - Flows of resources- outward flow of local products or natural resources from a places can have a large impact on local companies. Products that once were consumed local or regionally can now be sold to global markets.
      - Flows of money and investment can have a positive and negative impact of economic characteristics on places, e.g. reduced investment and competition from global markets had led to the decline of some primary industries in the UK, which damaged the economies of many places.
      - Flows of people- people visiting places can change the economic characteristics of those places, e.g. ST. Ives in Cornwall used to be a fishing settlement, but is now a popular destination.
    - - Flows of people- regional migration from rural areas to urban areas in poorer countries has changed social characterises and levels of social inequality. E.g. in India, large-scale rural to urban migration has resulted in slums in cities such as Mumbai.
      - Flows of resources- the outward flow of natural resources from poorer countries can change levels of social inequality. E.g. large amounts of oil are extracted in Nigeria then exported round the world, but most wealth that is generated goes to a few individuals who have a high quality of life, while large proportions are still in poverty with a low quality of life.
      - Flows of money and investment- the process of gentrification has improved the social characteristics of some places, but an increase in inequality. E.g. Notting Hill- Portland Road.
  - - - Flows of money, investment and ideas- new cultural ideas introduced to places can change the characteristics of those places, e.g. fast food companies from the USA and KFC opened restaurants in China in the 80s and 90s. It has grown rapidly since- it is thought that eating habits have chnaged over China. Chinese people have favoured western-style fast food over traditional Chinese food.
      - Flows of people- new people moving to a place, or visiting, bring their culture with them, which changes characteristics. E.g. migration in the 20th century have experienced mass international migration from commonwealth countries, creating multi-ethnic communities.
    - - Flows of money and investment, e.g. governments or businesses, can change the demographic characteristics of places. E.g. governments can invest money in specific places in order to attracted people to live there. E.g. The London Docklands was redeveloped in 1981.
      - Flows of ideas and resources- ideas such as the use of birth control can flow to new places an d affect their demographic characteristics, e.g. reducing the birth rate and affecting the population size.
      - Flows of people, e,g. the age or gender balance. E.g. On a local scale, younger people have been leaving Uckfield in East Sussex, as they are unable to afford to buy a house in the are, leaving a high proportion of older people.
