Atomic Structure
Atomic Number
An atom of an element has its own characteristic number of protons in its nucleus, which distinguishes it from the atoms of other elements.
-
The atomic number is equal to the number of electrons in the neutral atom of an element. The number of protons is equal to number of electrons.

Isotopes
-
For example hydrogen has three isotopes, similarly oxygen has two isotopes.
They differ in their physical properties like- density, boiling point, etc.

Structure of an atom
-
There are 2 parts of an atom, the nucleus and the empty space which consists of orbits which are imaginary paths. The nucleus is a positively charged body and consists of the positively charged particles protons and the neutrally charged neutrons. The orbits are negatively charged where the negatively charged particles, the electrons, revolve. These electrons revolve around the nucleus.
