Case Study - China
Reasons for implementing population policy
Rapidly increasing population
Communist leader Mao Zedong encourage large families to make China stronger
Implement "later, longer, fewer" policy
Encourage people to have their first child later, wait longer between children, and ultimately have fewer children
This, however, was deemed inadequate for slowing China's population growth
By 1970s, China realizes they are unable to facilitate such an increasing population
Lack of jobs, facilities, housing, etc.
1978-1983, China implements "One family, One child" policy
High growth rate
Consequences of "one child" policy
Negative
Public unrest due to harsh enforcement of policy
Forced abortions and sterilisations
Major fines and disadvantages for having a second child
Up to $14000USD fines
Could not apply for best schools
Not given priority to housing, healthcare, etc.
Abandoned second children, dumping children with other adults
Positive
Successful in slowing population growth
Growth rate dropped from 2.4% in 1984 to 1% in 2006
Fertility rate dropped from 2.5 to 1.7, 1984-2006
