CURRICULUM ISSUES & TRENDS IN ENGLISH TEACHING AND LEARNING
ISSUES
No motivation
Learners have no motivation to learn a language they are not
familiar with.
Their proficiency in their mother tongue will make them lose
interest in learning a new language
Not given enough importance
English has not been given enough importance as the other
science subjects.
English is important once students further their studies in
tertiary education as most of the subjects are taught in English.
The number of period per week is not sufficient compared to
other subjects.
Other Language / Subject Interference
Learners will pay more attention to Bahasa Malaysia as it is a
must pass subject
Teachers will also not put much effort in teaching English as
they know students pay more attention only on prerequisite
subjects.
Not a prerequisite subject
English is not a must pass subject in PT3 and SPM
English is also not a compulsory requirement for
university intake for most of the courses.
Content / Syllabus
Students find it boring to learn English as the content and
syllabus have always been the same from primary level up to
secondary level.
The syllabus including Tenses, Adjectives, Articles, Adverb are
the basic syllabus that students learn from primary to
secondary education.
Teachers will not put effort to teach all the basic syllabus as
they feel that students have prior knowledge on all the basic
syllabus.
SOLUTIONS / SUGGESTIONS
Make English 'must-pass' subject
English language should be made as a compulsory subject for
SPM
If English is made as a compulsory pass subject for SPM,
students will put in more effort to learn and achieve good
results.
Teachers should also put in more effort in making sure that
students work hard in passing the subject the least.
Provide more assessment
Students should be given enough assessment to get them
ready with the major examination.
Assessments should start from primary school level in order for
students to be well equipped and master the language in order
to perform well in tertiary education.
Teachers should provide more assessments such as monthly
examination, mid term, open book test, and classroom test
Extra Activities
Teachers should introduce more activities involving English
such as Debate, Choral Speaking, Public Speaking, etc.
These activities will allow students to be more involved in
English and pay more attention in the subject.
Practice
Languages can best be mastered if enough oral practice is
done.
Students must speak and practice the language more in order
to master the language better.
When spoken English is mastered, all the other grammar rules
will be easier to master.
