LEARNING OUTCOME:
Reflect on human diversity and recognize the differences in user needs
EDUCATION
INTERSECTIONALITY
I have experienced overlapping forms of discrimination in the workplace (race and gender) and would like to share these perspectives
Learn about others experiences or forms of intersectional oppression (i.e., sexuality, physical impairments, race, mental health, gender, age discrimination etc.)
SOCIAL MODEL OF DISABILITY
Took a course called AI and Health whereby the Social Model of Disability was introduced in the context of healthcare. I am excited to apply this model to design.
RESEARCH
I have completed research surrounding the introduction of digital technologies and more recently AI in Canada's e-mental health strategy. Mental health is a great example of disability as a continuum, whereby we all to some degree experience mental health yet some individuals are disabled by the attitudes and structures of our society (mismatches)
CULTURAL STUDIES
Interested in how human diversity and difference in design can be related to Stuart Hall's encoding and decoding of messages (how does a disconnect between what is sent and what is received misunderstandings)
PERSONAL LIFE
SIBLING WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY
By disabilities I mean the education system failed to adequately address his jagged learning profile (reading comprehension impairment became a totalizing disability)
Curious to learn how an education system that reflects on human diversity and students' differences could enhance his education
How will ATs evolve to help people on the edge vs. the 'average'
WOMAN OF COLOUR
How can my lived experience as a visible minority help inform my design decisions (diverse, equitable and inclusive)
SMALL TOWN
Grew up in a predominantly white community that lacked diversity in terms of physical appearance, ideology, and socioeconomic status. This lead people who were "at the edges" to appear even more ostracized or mismatched.
FAMILY
Always promoted inclusive thinking and emphasized the importance of embracing difference and viewing it as strength / differentiator.
CAREER
MONOLITHIC WORKPLACE
Have worked in multiple environments that do not prioritize accessibility due to lack of lived experience
DESIGN TO EDGES
Provide a unique perspective that reminds colleagues of the benefits of individual needs
Leverage technologies that allow us to recognize the unique needs of individual users (i.e., data collection tools and AI)
Who is at the center? Why are they there? How has design privledged some groups over others
CX JOB
CX job requires me to complete consumer research for brands and experiences. Understanding human diversity and user differences will help me develop personas that account that are diverse, equitable and inclusive
Journey Mapping & Persona Development
How does human diversity and user differences fundamentally change a user's journey.
Can a journey map or a persona reflect more that one person's journey and identity? Are journey maps and personas the best way to understand human diversity and different needs? Do these techniques fall victim to the myth of average?
Working on a project that challenges I&D practices, what these practices aim to achieve, and whether or not they elicit "real" change
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
ENABLING OR DISABLING?
Interested in learning how current digital technologies account for (or fail to account for) human diversity and differences in user needs
Are ICTs a 'solution'. How can inclusive design (which accounts for diversity and difference) promote the former rather than the later
We are inundated by digital technologies... how can digital transformation become an inclusive movement rather than simply the digitization of the past?
HOBBIES
DANCE
Allowed me to understand a different form of expression (neither verbal or written). I am curious to learn more about diverse user needs as they relate to expressiveness and communication.
READING
How can different perspectives be included or excluded from literature?
Who has access to the written word? Who does not? I recognize the privilege it is to be able to read both physically and cognitively.
