The Greenhouse Effect
-
Greenhouse gases - Methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide are the main greenhouse gases along with water vapour.
The atmosphere allows heat from the Sun (short-wave radiation) to pass through to heat the Earth's surface.
The Earth's surface then reflects the heat (long-wave radiation)
The heat is trapped by greenhouse gases (Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are the main ones) this then radiates back to the Earth.
This heats up the Earth.
Human Factors Increasing Global Warming
Burning fossil fuels - Coal, gas and oil - it releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Deforestation - Trees absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. When they are cut down, there is less trees to take in Carbon dioxide.
Dumping waste in landfills - When the waste decomposes it lets out methane.
Agriculture - Agriculture can lead to nitrogen oxides being released into the atmosphere.
Natural Factors Increasing Climate Change > Orbital Changes - The Earth has a natural warming and cooling periods caused by Milankovitch cycles or variations in the tilt and/or orbit of the Earth around the Sun.
Volcanic activity - During a volcanic eruption carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.
Solar Output - There can be fluctuations in the amount of radiation in the sun. If there is a higher amount then it will increase the Earth's temperatures.
Forest fires - Carbon stored in the trees and plants, releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Arctic animals such as polar bears and arctic foxes depend on the polar ice to hunting and their habitats. The melting of ice caps in the polar regions as a consequence of climate change will mean that the polar bears and arctic foxes will lose their hunting ground and their habitats. Resulting in not being able to survive. In turn it could interrupt the food chain resulting in other species not surviving. Also, the melting ice caps will result in sea levels rising.
