Implications on socio-scientific issues
Economic Implications
Loss of jobs which results in a loss of income. Because of this a subsidy was paid to make up for the loss in wages
Lack of travel which means the economy suffers: some countries rely heavily on tourism
Hospitality industry suffers
Businesses
Small business / Family businesses suffer: eg. catering - but could inspire people to grow from there
Housing crisis
Overwhelming Health system: running out of space, supplies and ventilators
Ethical Implications
Against / For vaccinations - which could harm herd immunity because some people would refuse to vaccine which can harm the people who cannot vaccinate
There was a misunderstanding on whether covid was dramatised for the media which leads to people's different ethical beliefs
Compulsory? - some cultures don't allow things into your body, personal freedom (very high demand to choose your own rights - America, whereas in China personal freedom is not valued
Religious
Jehovah's witness: no blood products
Catholic: fetal cells (they test vaccines on fetal cells by exposing them to the virus and then vaccinating them because they need to test it on human cells)
Barriers - some people leaving work to get vaccination may put their jobs at risk
People are forced to decide between choosing to stay at work and not get vaccinated or going to get vaccinated to protect the community but risk losing hours of work and therefore pay
Tested on animals so some people are against
Should you grow vaccines in eggs? MMR vaccine
Social and Emotional
Mental health
Anxiety
Loss of jobs for counsellors so it is hard to get access to them
Lack of socialising: loneliness, sadness
Family worries: death, grief
Miss important events
Wedding
Funeral
Disease implications:
If a family member or caregiver has passed away then the child will have to go to foster care or adoption. This provides a financial strain on the government
Lose friends and human interaction
Understanding of situations which links back to people's ethical beliefs on whether they should socialise to benefit themselves emotionally or protect the wider community
Equity
Some people cannot afford the vaccine or even basic health care which is unfair to people
Some countries can't have the vaccines exported: eg. Western countries have access to them first
Companies are also unfair because the don't pay their wage subsidy to their employees which is unfair to individuals. This is links back to economic implications which is why individuals complain about their lack of income
Huge logistics to consider in terms of order of vaccination which might put others first because of alphabetical order
In Brazil and India they prioritised people who could pay for the vaccine as opposed to the most vulnerable
