Tools that make business communication more effective
Some aspects of complexity in communication are
What is "true" is not what the sender says, but what the receiver understands.
Responsibility for effective communication rests with both the sender and the receiver.
Each person hears and sees selectively. A message that matches the receiver's values is extended (and vice versa).
Communication requires recipients to say that they have received a message and to show that they have really understood it.
Main barriers in communication:
We believe that what we communicate is as clear to others as it is to us.
We believe that the way we perceive situations is the same as how others perceive it.
We believe that we all give the same meaning to words.
We believe that there is only one correct way to do things, of course ours.
And at the organizational level:
The hierarchical levels.
Authority and status.
The specialization and its related jargon.
Active listening you should consider:
Be empathetic (emotionally and physically)
Ask questions
Summarize (paraphrase)
Proper body position and eye contact
Reflect the speaker's emotions (acknowledge the other's feelings)
