Formative Assessments
Definition: A form of assessment used to process and gather evidence of student learning. This form of assessment is used to provide feedback, adjust instruction using strategies that will enhance achievement and learners can change their behaviors
Class Discussions: Class discussions are a type of formative assessment because the teacher will ask open-ended questions in order to understand what students have learned about a topic so far and can plan to adjust instruction (if needed) once the class discussion is over.
Quizzes: Quizzes are a type of formative assessment because the teacher can give the students a quiz at the end of a unit. The teacher will review the quizzes and can plan to adjust instruction to reteach or discuss any misconceptions that are present.

Summative Assessments
Definition: A form of assessment that is given at the end of a unit. This form of assessment has more expectations, therefore they may be graded at a higher level.
Final Exams: Final exams are a type of summative assessment that are given at the end of a course. This type of assessment is used for report cards and district/state reports.
Research Projects: Research projects are a type of summative assessment that are given at the end of a course. Students may be required to complete this in place of a final exam. These projects are graded at a higher level.
Diagnostic Assessments
Definition: A form of assessment that is conducted to inform teachers of student achievement gaps and other academic abilities.
Running Records: Running records are a type of diagnostic assessment that is given to students throughout the school year in order to assess their reading level and track their progress.
Pre-Course Exams: Pre-course exams are a type of diagnostic assessment that is given to students before starting a course in order for teachers to get background knowledge about what the students know before beginning the course.
Performance Assessments
Definition: A form of assessment that requires students to perform a task instead of taking an exam.
Speeches: Speeches are a type of performance assessment that students may be required to do in order to express their opinion and ideas about a topic within their course.
Writing Reports: Writing reports are a type of performance assessment that students may complete in order to show their reading and writing skills that they have learned throughout the school year. Students may also present these to the class.
