Pathophysiology
Signs and symptoms may appear suddenly or develop over time
A condition caused by excessive fluid in the lungs
In most cases heart problems causes pulmonary edema
Pulmonary edema that develops suddenly is a medical emergency requiring immediate care
Interventions
Assess patient vital signs
administer prescribed medications
elevate head of bed
turn patient every 2 hours
Pertinent assessment findings
breathing difficulty
swelling of the lower extremities
buildup of fluids surrounding the lungs
Congestion and swelling of the liver
Patient education
Don't smoke
exercise regularly
manage weight
limit salt and alcohol
Medications
Bumetanide
Furosemide
antibiotics
