Pathophysiology
Pulmonary edema is a condition caused by excess fluid in the lungs.
This fluid collects in the numerous air sacs in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe.
Medications
Diuretic
Pulmonary edema is usually caused by a heart condition.
Other causes include pneumonia, exposure to certain toxins and drugs, and being at high elevations.
Antifungal
Bemetanide
Ferosemide
Interventions
oxygen through a face mask or nasal cannula
Monitor the patient's respiratory rate, pattern, and effort.
Support the patient in the Fowler position and give O2 as ordered.
Pertinent Assessment Findings
severe dyspnea
diaphoresis
wheezing
sometimes blood-tinged frothy sputum.
Patient Education
Weigh yourself daily
Rest as needed
Eat a variety of healthy foods
Limit or avoid alcohol
