        In order to survive under the constraints of Stalin's regime, Shostakovich had to play the system very well in order to not get deported to a gulag or get interrogated and arrested.
        
        Shostakovich thus earned high praise for not succumbing to the errors of his ways - that is, the "uncouth" way that he wrote Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Its avant-garde nature completely clashed with the concept of Socialist Realism.
        
        Fundamentally, Socialist Realism, aimed to reflect the ideas of the working class and to support the state. As such, ideal pieces following Socialist Realism would be reflective of the proletariat and, tonally, praise the ruling party, which was the Soviet government.
