How to Identify and help a struggling student
By John-Henry McGilligan
Observe the students and keep records of how they perform in class and also of their emotional, social, and physical well-being.
If a student seems to be struggling, try to identify the areas of weakness or change.
Is the student performing poorly on tests?
Is the student struggling with reading and/or writing?
Is the student avoiding participation in the classroom?
Is the student easily distracted or have trouble staying focused?
Is the student having trouble with planning and organization?
Is the student showing any vision and/or hearing problems?
Is the student acting out or exhibiting unusual behaviors?
These signs alone are not enough to determine that a person needs special education. Only a professional can diagnose a learning disability. The school will monitor the student to see if their struggles continue, if there is no change in their circumstances the student will be referred to a professional for assessment.
The student will be evaluated by a professional to see if they have a learning disability.
The parents and school must await the eligibility of the student.
The school will apply activities and lessons for helping the struggling student.
Eligibility is decided. Though parents can challenge this ruling.
Next, IEP meeting is scheduled
If the parents give their consent for their child to receive services, then the school will start to carry out the Students IEP.
