1.1 DECLINE IN CONFIDENCE 1968-1980 (MASSEP)
THE MEDIA
-Access to the media was growing rapidly as more people had televisions and radios.
-During FDRs presidency the media saw its role as explaining policies.
-During Truman it critiqued mishandling of events.
-After 1968 it tried to uncover government deception, showing that the government were not telling the whole story.
White house administration
Roosevelt enlarged the white house staff and created bureaus that reported to the president.
-Staff acted in the president's name without consulting him. So they took bribes. Causing disillusionment.
As the staffing increased the administrations needed more funds so they relied on big doners who expected influence if they won. Creating disillusionment.
Scandal
The Watergate scandal 1972-1974 showed that Nixon was capable of robbery and surveillance of his opponents.
Tapes were shown in the Whitehouse that he swore and was happy to lie to the American people.
This caused confidence to fall to rock bottom.
SOCIAL FACTORS
There were many protests that occurred after the killing of MLK.
Increased violence between guardsmen. In a university protest in 1970 Ohiho guardsmen shot 4 students.
In addition, due to the increased liberal thinking, the middle class thought that too much was being done for the poor.
The 1965 voting rights act stopped many from voting Republican.
MASSEP
