CULTURES OF ECUADOR
-
MESTIZOS, INDIGENOUS AND BLACK OR AFRICAN-DESCENDANTS CULTURES.
The big cultural groups of Ecuador are: Mestizos, indigenous and blacks or African-descendants.
Mestizos
They inhabit the cities of our country, although there is also a large number of mestizo farmers.
Indigenous
The indigenous have been able to preserve their cultures thanks to their resistance. However, some elements of indigenous identity (rituals, clothing, language and festivities) are threatened.
-
The mestizo cultural values come from Europeans, indigenous people or of Afro-Ecuadorians, but in many cases these values are original.
MIGRANT’S DESCENDANTS
Ecuadorian culture received influence of European and Asian migrants who settled in different cities of the country.
Currently, the emigration of many Ecuadorians to Europe and the United States searching for job opportunities influences the habits and customs of our people.
REGIONAL CULTURES
Each province has its own food, festivities, customs, and social organization.
Farmers from the coast (montuvios) have a very characteristic culture, which is expressed in their way of life, work, fun, etc.
THE NATIONAL CULTURE
Our culture has been influenced by the cultures of other countries, through the media and an active exchange.
There are among us some common features that distinguish us but they are not only with our national symbols, such as the flag, the coat of arms and the anthem, but very similar forms of speaking Spanish and our food.
