KEY TERMS
-
-
SAMPLE
A selection of observations taken from a subset of the population to give information about the population as a whole.
SIMPLE RANDOM SAMPLING
-
To carry out a simple random sample, create a sampling frame which is a numbered list.
In order to select the units use a random name generator (calculator) or use lottery sampling.
Lottery sampling is when the members of the sampling frame get put in a hat.
-
STRATIFIED SAMPLING
The population is divided into mutually exclusive strata and a simple random sample is taken from each.
number in population/ number in overall population x sample size.
-
METHODS OF SAMPLING:
simple random sampling,
systematic sampling,
stratified sampling.
Systematic random sampling:
The required elements are taken at regular intervals from the list.
The initial starting point should be chosen randomly.
