TOPIC 28 TRANSPORTS
LAND TRANSPORTATION
During the first half of the 20th century, the Guayaquil-Quito railroad was an axis of transport and national articulation.
-
The growth of the automotive fleet, especially in large cities, has turned transport into a source of air pollution, noise and congestion.
-
MARITIME TRANSPORTATION
Cargo maritime transport is another strategic means for Ecuadorian exports to the world market, such as bananas,
cocoa, coffee, and other products.
The port of Guayaquil is the most important in the country, due to the number of international traffic ships that arrive and the movement of cargo (not oil).
Other important ports are Puerto Bolívar, Esmeraldas and Manta.
-
THE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
Although we learn about them every day, we must worry about traffic accidents, whose number rises every year. The province of Guayas registered the highest number of accidents with 28%, followed by Pichincha with 26%.
Traffic accidents mostly crash, cause more than ten thousand victims, including injured and dead. The provinces that registered the highest number of victims are Pichincha (23.6%) and Guayas (20.6%).
-
AIR TRANSPORTATION
International air traffic has increased in recent years, especially through the airports of Quito and Guayaquil. Most of the passengers that enter through Quito come from Bogotá, Miami, and Lima.
There is also a large increase in air transport within the country, linking the main cities and small provincial capitals of the Amazon.
