1.1 COLD WAR
START OF COLD WAR:
-
The USA and USSR started off by having an ideological divide which was between capitalism and anti capitalism.
There became a cold war when the countries occupied by the USSR then set up as communist Governments.
In 1947 Truman told congress that the USA was a different way of life compared to the USSR and he proposed a policy of 'containment'.
This would be done through the Truman doctrine that would aid countries who were at risk of a communist take over.
This was followed up by the Marshall plan that was aid to war-torn countries.
-When USSR blockaded Berlin in 1948, 1949 US airlifted in supplies.
COLD WAR POLICIES.
THE ARMS RACE
From 1957 to 1958 USA's holdings of atomic bombs increased from 13 to 50.
This caused the USSR to spend on weapons which was costly for both governments.
Eventually they both stockpiled enough weapons to the point of MAD (Mutually assured destruction).
THE ARMED SERVICES
Had a large impact on the domestic economy as it costed lots to run. But it was a customer for many businesses from food to fabric.
THE SPACE RACE
Without the cold war it is unlikely that the congress would have voted for so much money to be invested into it.
In 1957 USSR sent sputnik 1 to space.
The USA retaliated by sending the first man on the moon in 1969 spending 25 billion dollars.
