How to Identify and Help Students with Learning Disabilities
Jennie
Observe and identify students who are struggling. Questions to think about while observing.
= Is it an issue that I can handle in class? Do I need support from the school or parents? Are the parents aware about this problem? Does the school have a special program planned out for the student?
First teacher talk to the student and ask questions about what they are going through.
Try to handle the problem in class
With the information I got from asking question to the student, come up with strategies I could use during class.
Ask other teachers if they've experienced similar cases. Discuss the strategies that I've came up with and ask their opinions and feedbacks. (Talking to other teachers sometimes gives you best ideas)
Use the strategies I came up with. Try changing the teaching methods and environment. Observe the student and keep on track. See if the plan is working out and the student is making progress
Come up with a different strategy if the current one seem to not work.
Some Strategies Teachers Could Use
If handing the problem in class doesn't work, reach out for help in School
Is there a teacher, counselor or a special program to support the student.
Assistant teacher.
If possible, an assistant teacher could come to classes to help the student catching up the class and with is work.
They could also give feedbacks to the teacher what specifically the student is struggling with. They might point out the things teacher could have missed out
Counselor
A counselor could help the student emotionally and analyze their behavior. They could give a clear explanation about the problematic behavior. They could also give come strategies or tips to handle the matter.
Problem Solving Team
The teacher will contact the Problem Solving Team instructor to discuss some strategies and plans. The teacher could even ask special education programs or IEP for the student.
Notify the parents about the current situation
Are they aware that the student is struggling in class?
Yes :check:
Ask the parents when did it start and what kind of strategies they've been using at home (get information about the student in detail).
Talk about if the student is on a medical treatment or is meeting a special counselor for the issues.
Ask them questions to identify if the parents are supportive at home.
If the student is getting a special treatment, tell them how he/she is doing during class. Let them know if I've observed any progresses
Discuss about the strategies the teacher is using in class and what the parents could do do help at home.
Recommend the parents to get their child evaluated by a specialist from the area the student is having problem with.
If the student is in a situation that doesn't need treatment, tell the parents why I think he/she is struggling using the data I've got by observing.
No :red_cross:
Let them know what kind of struggles their child has been showing during class. Ask them how they are doing in home. Tell them parental support is very important.
