Chapter 5: Atomic structure
Atoms
Neutrons
No charge (0)
Relative mass of 1
Electron
Relative mass of 1/1840 (negligible)
-1 charge
Protons
Relative mass of 1
+1 charge
No. of protons = No. of electrons on periodic table (not ionic or covalent); negative charge cancel out positive charge, hence neutral
Numbers on the periodic table
Nucleon number; mass number; relative atomic mass (bigger no) --> Total no of protons and neutrons in atom
Proton/ atomic number (smaller no) --> No of protons/ electrons
Periods(horizontal) --> how many electron shells
Group(vertical) --> how electrons in valence electron shell
Isotopes
Same element, same no of protons, electron but diff no of neutrons
Chlorine-35 (75%), Chlorine-37 (25%)
Use: Radioisotopes
Arrangement of electrons in atoms
Nucleus (neutrons and protons)
Electron shells
First shell: only 2 electrons before max
Subsequent shells: 8 electrons before max
Valence electron shell: Most outer electron shell
