South America
Regions
South America is incomparable with other continents due to its biodiversity of flora and fauna species. It can be divided into 3 regions:
Mountains and Highlands:
The Andes mountain range is the most important in South America, but it is also the longest in the world.
River basins:
Orinoco River Basin: has 948.00 km2, and flows north of the Amazon from the Guyana plateau in northern Brazil to empty into the Atlantic Ocean in Venezuela. The main biome of this basin is Los Llanos and it is the habitat of many species of birds.
The Paraguay / Paraná River Basin: covers 2.8 million km2, which is most of the southeast of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina. In the Paraná river are a series of immense waterfalls. The Rio de la Plata is the basin that provides water to the Pampa biome.
The Amazon River basin: has a surface area of 7 million km2, it is the biggest river basin in the world. The Amazon is the life force of the impressive biome of the Amazon rainforest. This tropical biome has: incredible animal life and many species of trees.
Coastal Plains:
The coastal plains are found on the northeast coast of Brazil, in the Atlantic Ocean, on the Ecuadorian coast, and on the western Pacific coast of Peru and Chile. The coastal plains of Brazil, Peru and Chile are very dry. The plains of Ecuador are humid.
