MESTIZOS, INDIGENOUS AND BLACK OR AFRICAN-DESCENDANTS
CULTURES
The groups of Ecuador are: Mestizos, indigenous and blacks or African-descendants. Mestizos constitute the majority of the Ecuadorian population. In general, they inhabit the cities of our country.
They are the most ancient human group of Ecuador. Its presencen goes back to ten or twelve thousand years. Indigenous cultures onserve characteristic traits of its past, but they have not remained static. Throughout history, they have assimilated European, afro-descendant and mestizo cultural elements. Ecuadorian indigenous are diverse from mestizos and Afro-Ecuadorians but they are also diverse among them.
They have lived in Ecuador since colonial times and have a great presence in several provinces of the country, especially Esmeraldas, Imbabura, Guayas, Carchi and Pichincha. Their own cultural traits have been preserved for centuries, but poverty and the influence of mass culture put its cultural traits in danger.
THE NATIONAL CULTURE
Ecuador is a country of diversities, but also a developed national culture. There are among us some common features that distinguish us. Not only the identification with our national symbols, such as the flag, and the anthem, but very similar forms of speaking Spanish and our food. Customs such as the "mingas" and “años viejos” that belong to most Ecuadorians.
The national culture has been enriched with indigenous, European, AfroEcuadorian and mestizo elements; also with those coming from different regions of the country. Our culture has been influenced by the cultures of other countries, through the media and an active exchange.
MIGRANT’S DESCENDANTS
The cultural diversity of Ecuador has been enriched also by the contribution of groups of people who were migrants whose offspring now lives as part of Ecuadorian society. For example, there are a lot of people from Colombia and Peru here in our country and vice versa in Colombia and Peru, there are also many ecuadorian people.
REGIONAL CULTURES
In Ecuador, diverse cultures have been developed that are settled in the regions, which have their own customs, ways of speaking, cooking, etc
