WHY SECOND RED SCARE
HUAC
HUAC was set up in 1938 to investigate people for un-american activities.
Elizabeth Bentley, told the HUAC that she had been part of a Moscow led spy ring in 1948.
-Three days later Whittaker Chambers told government of more employees.
Trials of Alger Hiss in 1949 and the Rosenbergs 1951 had trials that were high profile.

Truman was criticised for this as it was suggested that he did not give enough support to Kai-shek. However, Kai-Shek was seen as corrupt.

In 1950 He gave a speech to a women's republican group and announced a list of 205 supposed communists working in the state department. However, the list was asked for viewing he claimed he left it on a plane.
The next day he revised this number to 57 and when called to the senate it became 81.

to investigate these accusations.

However, when Mcarthy targeted the army in 1953 and interviewed them in an unreasonable way in the public eye, he lost support.
These were televised and some 20 million people watched them.

The Second Red scare changed civil liberties as the authorities gained power.
FBI had power to bring people to HUAC or Loyalty boards in order to be questioned.
They bugged phones, opened mail and people lost freedom of expression.
A third of Librarians removed Karl Marx books from shelves.
When Nikita Krushcehv visited the USA in 1959 he was met with anti communist demonstrations.
Only good communist is a dead communist.
Comittee of present danger was formed that took a hard line towards communism.
The anti-communism was the only sentiment that united Republicans and Democrats.
