How can differentiated instruction be used to assist students who are struggling?
-Data can be used to determine where students might require additional instructional interventions
Can be used to target missing skills
Used as a tool to allow students to feel successful
Provides leveled instruction for students who are struggling with core content
How do teachers involve parents in helping struggling students?
Communication early and often
Connecting with parents to better understand the students home life and needs
Create an environment where families know that we are there to help. We want the best for the students and we recognize their strengths and the areas where they might need additional help
Provide materials for families
Listen and be a source of support for both the students and families
Daily checks on behavior and engagement
Placing the student on a daily tracker to ensure that the parents are aware of what is happening throughout the school day
What is the school administration's directive for special education?

Staying up to date on legislation and mandates
Working as a team to make sure protocols are followed
Director of Special Education and a skilled team in that specific department to support special education directives
Building level administration is present during SST meeting to make sure everyone is on the same page
Communication between building administrators, teachers and parents
SST meetings to determine appropriate testing or classroom plans to track progress

How do you determine if a student should be referred to special education services?
Keep notes on students who's academic performance or behaviors are concerning
Keep work samples from a struggling student and work samples from a typical student for comparison
SST meeting to discuss students data and performance in class
Students usually need to have good attendance, show little growth, and be in the lower 10% to be considered for special education services
Review data, data plays a large roll
Progress monitoring
Change or add interventions
Set a goal and review SST data
If growth is not progressing special education services may be addressed in conjunction with the family
Special education testing/assessment is administered by the special education team
