1.1 Leadership styles 1945-72
SHY TRUMAN 1945-1953
[Personality](: not charismatic and not confident and could be overwhelmed by the importance of decisions 'to err is truman'.
Media: He understood the importance of the media, he did media briefings with flipchart and point.
Public: Had little connection as he did not try and explain strategy (Korean War).
Organisational ability: Worked well with WHOUSE but did not always choose right people.
Congress: did not have a good reslationship even with the Republican majority. Due to low networking and charm
OPTIMISTIC EISENHOWER 1953-1961
PERSONALITY: very optimistic and friendly personality.
MEDIA: saw working with the media as important but often minimised or obscured a problem.
PUBLIC: was easy to understand with the public as he used clear imagery eg Dominoes
Organisational skills: Exceptional organising and planned ahead.
CONGRESS: worked well due to good political bargaining
LIKED KENNEDY 1961-1963
PERSONALITY- came from a political background so understood the importance of speeches.
MEDIA: understood importance and even had personal chats and learned names.
Public: was seen as charming and attractive
Organisation: Made bad decisions as they tried to compete for attention
Congress- took advantage of family connections
EXPERIENCED LYNDON B JOHSNON
1963-1969
PERSONALITY- had been in politics for a while so he could change his behaviour to suit who he was with
MEDIA- Not a natural with the media but tried to keep them informed.
PUBLIC- Patchy, he was better with smaller groups
ORGANISATION- He used Kennedy's organisation whch didn't suit him
CONGRESS- His experience allowed him to persuade and bargain with congress.
Awkward Nixon 1969-1974
Personality- intelligent but he hated people disagreeing with him.
Media- he distrusted the media and handled them badly eg watergate.
Public- not good with people and seemed awkward and insecure.
Organisation- held weekly meetings at the whitehouse
Congress- due to his suspicious manner he found it difficult to build relations with congress.
