Apart from the autonomous government, each of the islands is endowed with its own political organization and administration held by the so-called Island Councils.
Since the 2007 elections, a direct vote has been taken separately to choose the composition of the Island Councils, whose members previously coincided with the deputies of each island elected to the Parliament of the Balearic Islands.
Tertiary Sector
The main sector of the Balearic Economy. More than 70% of the population works in the service sector.
Primary sector
Is not really relevant. In 2009, agriculture represented only 1% of the GDP of the Balearic Islands and employed 1.4% of the active population
Secondary sector
The main industrial activity in the Balearic Islands is construction, a product of tourist growth, which in 2009 represented 9.4% of its GDP.
