exocrine - secrete into a duct that carries the secretion to the surface of the body or to on of the body cavities.
endocrine - secrete hormones into the extracellular fluid that surrounds the the cell that make up the gland. the secretion usually passes into the capillaries to be transported by the blood (know as ductless glands)

hormones
hormones are chemicals secreted by endocrine glands, that are transported around the body in the bloodstream
hormones change the functioning of cells by changing the types, activities or quantities of proteins produced
steroid hormones
steroid hormones, such as oestrogen, progesterone, cortisol and aldosterone, are lipid-soluble meaning they do not dissolve in water
steroid hormones dissolve across the cell membrane and don't require a protein receptor to enter the cell
