1.2 Black Militance 1960s
MALCOM X
He believed in taking a more violent approach as he believed that white people would never do more than what they were forced to do.
He gave the 'ballot or bullet' speech.
However, months before his assassination he became more peaceful and had meetings with MLK.
BLACK POWER
Stokey Carmichael, leader of SNCC, started to move away from non-violent protest.
Instead of a 'cry of freedom' it was a 'black power'. This was then made by a symbol with a clenched fist.
(This symbol was done by Gold medalists at 1968 Olympics).
Black Power movement also set up radical trade unions push for back jobs and equal pay.
IMPACT- also made non-violent groups more pragmatic in approach.
1966 Black Panther movement was not a coherent force and was fragmented and worked on a local scale.
The Panthers worked in black communities and provided free food for school children.
They also made a 10 point programme where they tried to improve housing and black history.
They set up radical trade unions and breakfasts for schoolchildren.
RIOTS 1964
, In 1964 there were major riots in New York and Chicago.
They were triggered by instances of police brutality.
However, the media coverage replaced the peaceful image with the image of a black boy with a petrol bomb.
It helped hasten civil rights legislation but came with white backlash. Not helped when district in Los Angeles got 18 million in aid.
NOTHEN CRUSADE 1966
, King visited Ghettos in the north. He helped to set up tenant unions, improved working conditions and taught about non-violent protest.
-The campaign focused on Chicago.
However it brought about no permanent change.
King's relationship with the media also became sour.
-He also helped a Memphis sanitation campaign but he was assassinated on this in 1968.
IMPACT OF THE BLACK POWER
They set up radical trade unions to push for equal pay and black jobs.
-It also radicalised other groups like the NAACP
It was non coherent and fragmented as a force
Black panthers caught government attention as they wore a uniform and carried guns
