How to Help a Struggling Student - Coggle Diagram
How to Help a Struggling Student
Step 1: Make Observations :
Is the student frustrated in class?
Has differentiated instruction been used? What is/is not working?
Is it a behavioral or academic problem? Both?
Step 2: Compare Observations
Are other teachers having similar difficulties with this student in their class?
Does the issue seem to be with the content, process, product, or learning environment?
Step 3: Discuss Strategies
Should the parents be notified at this point? How serious is the problem?
Can accommodations be made with how the student engages with the material?
Can the classroom seat be changed? Fidget toys?
Step 4: Implement Strategies
Strategies must be used consistently, and by all teachers working with the student
Notes should be taken every week about what is working well/not well, and any changes that should be made
Step 5: Evaluation
If the student is not making progress, they should be referred to special education services at this time
Student should be evaluated for suspected learning disabilities
Step 6: Create IEP
A written Individual Education Program is put into place, and is used appropriately by all teachers
Student should be re-evaluated every semester, or if immense progress/little progress is made
