located below hypothalamus at base of brain. divided into anterior and posterior
anterior hormones
LH: ovulation in women, testosterone production in men
GH: growth of bones, muscles and organs
FSH: development of gametes
TSH: stimulate thyroid hormone release for energy and metabolism
ACTH: stimulate release of gluco and mineralocorticoid
prolactin: breast milk production
posterior hormones
vasopressin: vasoconstriction, retention of sodium and water
oxytocin: progress of labor, flow of breast milk, affects social and sexual interaction
hypothalamus hormones
controls release of pituitary hormones
dopamine: inhibit prolactin
GhRH: release GH
CRH: release ACTH
somatostatin: inhibit GH
TRH: release FSH
