Measuring CSR initatives
Focus on outcomes
Organisations should not just measure the quantifiable such as number of hours use, the cost of initiative or the number of employees engaged in the initiative. They also need to measure the outcome, that is how, the initiative changed the lives of the beneficiaries of the initiatives and/or helped create a better planet
-
Listen to stakeholders
By taking the time to understand the motivations, goals and needs of their stakeholders, organisations are not only able to develop initiatives that best serve those interests, they can also be smarter about selecting the metrics, data and stories that align with what the organisation's stakeholders value most
Engagement can be through one-on-one meetings, small focus groups or even social media polling
-
Learn from others
Organisations can learn to improve their impact measurement by reviewing the sustainability reports of other companies that have been applauded for them
-
Measure, refine, modify, measure again
Organisations who appear to have the most impact on their communities, their participants and their businesses do not look at a one time endeavor. They see CSR initiatives as an integral part of their business model
Over the period of the iniatitve, the board and management of the organisation will be evaluating the activities to find out what works best for the organisation and its stakeholders so more of it can be done and what doesn't work, so that management can interevene to either cease the activity or tweak and continuously improve it
