Y11 Components of fitness
AGILITY
The
ability to move and change direction quickly
(at speed) whilst maintaining control.
For example, rugby players like Jack Nowell need to have high levels of agility to evade being tackled when running with the ball.
BALANCE
The ability to
maintain the body’s centre of mass above the base
of support to stay on their feet and not fall
For example, a surfer would need balance to not fall off the board
CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE
The
ability of the heart, lungs and blood to transport oxygen around the body
to allow you not to get tired
Marathon runners like mo farah need this to
keep running and to allow him to keep going while his muscles are supplied with oxygen
COORDINATION
The
ability to use two or more body parts together in unison
Cricketers need coordination while batting and fielding because when
catching a ball they need to adjust their position to catch it
FLEXIBILTY
The range of motion at a joint
for example touching your toes
Divers like Tom Daley need flexibility
while performing a dive since their bodies need to twist and turn
while falling and these movements require lots of flexibility
POWER / EXPLOSIVE STRENGTH
The ability to
perform strength performances quickly
e.g usain bolt needs
power in a race to allow him to win eg exploding out of the blocks
in a 100m
REACTION TIME
The
time taken to respond to something.
Mendy would need a high reaction time. For example a
goalkeeper after a shot deflects of a defender
SPEED
The
ability to put body parts into motion quickly
. Being fast in a race or other context
Michael phelps would need to use a combination of speed and power to
win a freestyle race
to maximise his streamline and tumble turns
STRENGTH
Maximal: maximum force a muscle can exert
in a single maximal movement
Dynamic: ability to apply a force repeatedly over a period of time
Explosive: ability to perform strength based movements quickly
/ in succession
Static: ability to apply a force where the length of the muscle does not change
and there is no visible movement. Static = still
Ryan crouser would need lots of strength like power and maximal to throw the heavy shot put furthest
