Magazines
Pride Analysis
Serif font - formal typography. Suggests the paper and content is serious.
Red and black colour palette - red connotes love and black connotes strength.
Lighting is directly overhead - could show her to be powerful and a 'hero' for Propp's character theory.
The masthead, 'Pride' has connotations of self respect and self esteem. There is a subtext of resistance and affirmation of cultural identity.
The woman, Naomie Harris, is in front of the masthead. This could show that she has 'pride' and is proud to be of her heritage. It also shows the magazines popularity as they do not need to show the full name.
Despite her 'pride', the cover model does not feature natural afro-Caribbean hair - instead it has bean straightened. This could have been because of the consumerist nature of the magazine.
The model has a hand on her hip. This presents her as sassy and confident. It is also a photographer's trick to make her appear more slim and taller. This added beauty could make her aspirational for the readers.
The strapline says, "celebrating 24 years at the top!" The reader does not know what but it encourages the reader to feel a part of something great.
Harris is making eye contact with the camera/audience. This presents her as confident and helps to make the magazine more personal.
GQ Analysis
The colour palette consists of black, red and white. These are stereotypically 'manly' colours and have connotations of strength.
The coverline, 'how to be a man in 2016' implies that the reader is not already a man and has to read on to find out. This presents the magazine as an important, necessary how-to guide.
The coverline, 'your ideal beach watch for under £300' shows that the target audience is wealthy men. Since modern magazines survive primarily on advertising revenue, they are especially adept at selling things you did not know you wanted. Taking this into account, a £300 beach watch means that the target audience is especially wealthy.
The bull symbol on the exclamation mark connotes strength and presents the rock as fierce and powerful.
The coverline 'the truth behind the viola beach tragedy' presents the magazine as trustworthy and knowledgeable. By including more serious stories as well as fashion and entertainment, the magazine is broadening its range of offerings for the audience.
The name, 'The Rock' connotes strength and stability. His real name is smaller and underneath which could show that the magazine thinks that looks and persona are more important than the man beneath.
Johnson has a stern expression and is making eye contact with the camera. This presents him as intimidating, powerful and confident.
Marketing Posters Analysis
This Girl Can
The photo is a candid shot - the fact that is unstaged encourages women as they were scared of being judged.
The woman can be seen in lycra. She is in this because women felt that they were pressured into wearing lycra but 'looked fat' in it. It reassures the women looking at the poster.
The logo, 'this girl can' anchors the image. It has broad, clear lettering with a serif font.
Her body language shows her to be dancing. This has positive connotations.
The photo is a medium shot. This is because it shows her full body - something women were afraid of.
Her top is baggy and brandless - this shows that you do not need the 'proper equipment' to participate in sport.
'Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox.' The word 'pig' has connotations to mud, fat and stinky. The word 'fox' has connotations to being proud.
In the background, there are some other women. This could be because many women were scared of being judged.
The background features many warm colours. This connotes to positivity and warmth and could present sport as welcoming and good for you.
The word 'girl' is an all-encompassing noun. It could have been used to target to all women, no matter who they are.
The word 'girl' has negative connotations when it comes to sport ('throw like a girl' is a simile used to mock those who cannot throw). The phrase, 'this girl can' could be referencing that stereotype and challenging it.
Quality Street
The brand mascots can be seen in the photo frame in the background. This is an example of intertextuality and builds up brand loyalty and familiarity. The golden picture frame connotes wealth. They are looking down at the other characters; 'mentor' for Propp's character theory.
The woman on the right is wearing a red dress. The colour connotes to love; you will love the product. Her pose is flirtatious and manipulative. Red is an expensive colour - this reinforces the fact that the chocolates are a luxary.
The logo's colour is burgundy - an expensive colour. This presents the product as luxurious.
The women have been made to look like the chocolate wrappers. This objectifies them - you have both the women and chocolate to choose from. This can also be seen with the phrase 'delicious dilemma.'
Male 'hero' choosing between two 'damsels in distress' (Propp's character theory).
Average clothing and a normalised setting - social hierarchy. 'Affordable' message.
The man is smug and sly and is pictured in a suit. This connotes to wealth. Stereotypical - men were at work earning the money of the family. The man anchors the audience's eyes to the product which has significant phallic symbolism.
The women conform to two stereotypes;
Their need for chocolate
Their subservient body language to the dominant man.
The women are presented as manipulative as they are distracting the men whilst reaching for the 'prize' (chocolate) in his lap.
Film poster analysis
The man with the golden gun
The poster is hand illustrated which reflects the style of the time.
The gun (that covers a large majority of the bottom) creates an enigma and hints at the narrative. The colour, gold, connotes wealth.
The man holding the gun would be a 'villain' (Propp's character theory)
At the top of the page is the actor's name, roger moore, to encourage fans to watch the film.
The 007 logo is an intertextual reference.
The women can be seen in bikinis. They are presented as voyeuristic. They are also smaller than roger moore and to the side, objectifying them as they are only there for his pleasure.
The women apply to the male gaze theory - there force the audience to look through the eyes of a heterosexual man. This can also be seen with one of the women's arms stretched out in front of bond, seemingly protecting him.
Underneath Moore is a group of people doing martial arts. This is because martial arts films were very popular at the time of the film. It encouraged more fans to see the film. The woman in the martial arts costume goes against the stereotype of objectified women.
Roger Moore is directly addressing the audience. That, and the lack of a smile, shows how seriously he is expected to be taken. He also has a suit which connotes to wealth and presents him as powerful and confident.
As well as the martial arts, there is an energy plant in the bottom left. This could have been because of the energy crisis of the time.
He is seemingly calm despite the events going on around him. This highlights his strength of keeping composure.
It is clear to the audience that the film is an action/thriller. This is because of the gun, the explosions and the car doing a stunt.
Spectre
There is a mysterious figure wearing a mask behind Daniel Craig. He creates an enigma and hints at the narrative. Furthermore, the skull could connote to death and present him as a 'villain' (Propp's character theory).
Long shot + slight low angle - we are looking up to Bond. This presents him as powerful.
It does not say 'James Bond.' Rather, it only has the 007 logo which shows that the brand is well recognised.
Daniel Craig is in a suit. This presents him as powerful and wealthy. He is also standing with his legs apart, his arms crossed and has a stern expression. This presents him as proud, dominant and powerful.
There are three instances of intertextuality:
The mask, reminiscent of Baron Samedi
The suit, as worn by Sean Connery
The gun logo
The lighting is directly overhead. This makes Craig a 'hero' (Propp's character theory).
