Nigeria - how economic development affects quality of life.
air pollution
-damage nerves causing
damage to the brain
-Due to increased chance of bad health, it can
increase death rate and lower life expectancy
-It can cover the area in black soot
affecting growth of crops
-Nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide particles
cause acid rain, corrosion of cars, plants etc
-
causing breathing problems
or even leading to lung cancer
Deforestation
-Indigenous people homes can be invaded/ destroyed
-Chemicals,
dangerous objects and rubbish left behind
-
Extinction
or very few of an animal left
-Possible treatment/
medicine found in plants that weren’t yet discovered destroyed
-
Loss of habitat
for animals
-
Loss of food and resources, loss of jobs
Mining etc
-Loss of biodiversity
, habitat and species
-Once all material is found area left,
no attempt to save the destroyed land
-High risk of
danger for the people
working there
-
Respiratory problems
due to high amount of dust and toxic fumes
-
Loud noises
to surrounding areas
-People might leave as the mine gets bigger
-Large
eye-saw
-It contributes to
erosion
-Contamination of soil
-Rubbish dumps
-Can lead to pollution from the chemicals
, especially if its burnt (smell)
-
Can affect traffic
if rubbish overflows into road
-
Kills any grass or vegetation
its been laid on
-Contamination of water can
kill aquatic animals as well as put swimmers in danger
-Ugly to look at,
put tourists and other off the area
Overall effects
-Urban growth causes
overcrowding, which spreads disease
and hazards quicker
-Piles of rubbish and waste from people and factories will
contaminate the water and land to make it unsafe
-The surrounding areas are
unsafe and unpleasant
to live in, and the environment is severely damaged.
-The mining and oil extraction has
damaged the environment
e.g dead trees
Main causes
-
Economic growth leads to industry which leads to pollution
of the air, water, soil etc meaning when animals go to eat they get poisoned
-A
company needs resources
to create products meaning deforestation will occur
-
Mining for raw materials in quarries
creates air pollution and destroying the landscape
-Deforesting for space for cattle ranches plantations leads to
less biodiversity
-Urban areas grow rapidly meaning that pollution is a problem
(rural to urban migration)
-Oil industry leads to environmental damage in Niger delta
and destroys peoples livelihoods such as fishermen
