Identify clear reasons to collaborate
When choosing a partner or agreeing to enter into a partnership, it is important for both organisations to understand why they are collaborating and identify strong incentives for the partnership
Entering a partnership just because you don't want to be left out is not a good reason and will usually lead to a weak partnership
Find a 'fairy godmother'
It is important for both organisations to identify a core group of people totally committed to the partnership.
There is often a lot of risk associated with getting these partnerships started so commitment to the cause is essential
Set simple, credible goals
It is important for the organisation to have a simple, achievable goal, especially where the partners are unlikely bedefllows
Get professional help
Most partnerships need help to get started, especially where the cultures of the organisation clash, for example a private sector organisation and NGO
The facilitator should be independent and be able to drive the project forward, especially at the start while the partner organsiations are getting set up for the project
As the project matures, it may be possible to phase out a facilitator
Dedicate good people to the cause
If the partnership is to be strategic, both organisations will dedicate good people to the colloboration
Tying incentives and career progression to the success of the partnership is also important in ensuring that it is successful
Be flexible in defining success
Don't be too ambitious in what you are trying to achieve, as projects often depend on many issues to suceed
Achieving something may be moving in the right direction
The first time Unlever disclosed its environmental targets, it disclosed that it had not met all the targets but had made progress towards them. The organisation received a lot of kudos for trying and what it had achieved and virtually no criticism for not having achieved the targets

Organisations should plan an exit strategy for the partnership
