Chapter 10

Main themes

Civilization vs savagery

"P'raps he was only pretending--"..."It was an accident," said Piggy suddenly, "that's what it was. An accident".

Analysis: Although Piggy was one of the few guys left without going totally savage, he didn't want to accept the role he had in Simon's murder. In this quote we can see how he is fighting with his own thoughts, trying to convince himself that Simon's murder was an accident.

Man's inherited evil

"He's going to beat Wilfred".
"What for?". Robert shook his head doubtfully.
"I don't know. He didn't say. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up he's been"-- he giggled excitedly- "he's been tied up for hours, waiting-"

Analysis: In this quote it can be evidenced how the children tied Wifred without even having a reason to do so, just because they received orders. Obviously it is due to the savagery that is growing inside them, but the fact that they don't even know why Wifred is tied up and they know that he has been waiting for hours demonstrates the man's evil that they have developed.
