1945-1965
The 1944 education act marked the beginning of the modern state education system in the uk
Opened up secondary education to all social classes
Before this education was restricted to the sons and daughters of the wealthy middle and upper class.
The policy was part of the establishment of the welfare state.
Believed ignorance resulted from a lack of secondary education and this act would change that
Tripartite system established
The tripartite system
As part of the aim to create a “land fit for heroes”. After the second world war. Butler education act introduced secondary education for all pupils
Tripartite system had three levels of ability
Grammar schools for academically able pupils
Technical schools to teach trades and crafts
secondary modern for everyone else
Idea was equality of opportunity.
All students would take a iq test at 11 to discover what school they should belong in
Problems of tripartite system
Most Pupils grammar and secondary modern where the two options as few technical schools were made due to the cost of furnishing them
Grammar schools were seen as most prestigious.any student who didn't attend a grammar school was labelled a failure
Social class divide remained intact
Comprehensive schools

comprehensive school aimed to educate all students in the same school, regardless of class or ability
Facilities upgraded

Problems of comprehensive schools
In practice, comprehensive schools did not live up to ideas
Admissions based on geographical locations so students were largely of the same class
Most schools still used streaming and setting so labelling was still prevalent
During 1970s comprehensive schools came under attack from specifically the new right
New right criticize them for their lack of discipline and competition between schools
Also criticised for most able students being dragged down by less able students
Critisisms of new vocationalism
It provides cheap labour for business owners, exploitative to working class
Undermined bargaining power of unions
It made embarrassing unemployment statistics appear less damaging for government
Government did not care about helping the youth, only wanted the unemployment number down to make them appear successful
Cohen(1984) believed it was a way for the government to create well disciplined workers, rather than well skilled ones they claimed

Sure start to give young children better start in life and more opportunities
Education action zone set up in lowest performing areas to improve them
Government hostile to private education.
Government support of preschool and nursery increased
Increase number of students in higher education

Education systems across world becoming increasingly more alike
Competition between education in countries making them better
