Twelve Brain Rules
Evolution
We have 3 brains
- then we added a brain like a cat's to help anti fleeing,fighting food,etc
- then stopped all this with a Jelly like blanket called the cortex or human brain.
- we started with the "lizard brain" to keep us breathing.
- humans developed symbolic reasoning which allows dual representation or able to make things up that are not there.
Stimulate your senses
- Our senses evolved to work together-we learn best if we stimulate several senses together.
-
Natural Explorers
- Some parts of the brains stay as malleable as a baby's , so we can create neurons and learn new things throughout our lives.
- Our learning abilities don't have to change as we age.
- Babies are the model of how we learn not by passive reaction to the environment but by active testing through observation , hypothesis, experiment and conclusion.
Don't stress
- the bodies defence system is the release of adrenaline and cortisol. it's built for an immediate response to a serious but passing danger----> NOT constant stress.
- stress is not good because it does damage adrenaline which is created under stress create scars and our blood vessels that can cause heart attack and stroke and cortisol damages the cells in our hippocampus , crippling our ability to learn.
Sleep
- sleep well ,think well because the neurons of the brain show vigorous rhythmical activity when we are asleep perhaps replaying what you've learned in forming that into short and long term memories.
Vision
- We learn and remember best through pictures not through written or spoken words.
-
- Vision is by far the most dominant sense and taking up half of the brain's resources.
Gender Issues
- Women's brains are more complex ( X chromosomes are cognitive hotspots. Women have 2, men have 1).
- Men and Women respond differently to acute stress. Women activate the left hemispheres amygdala and remember the emotional details . Men use the right amygdala and get the gist.
-
Exercise
- Aerobic activity twice a week reduces the risk of dementia by 60%.
- one of the greatest predictors of successful aging, they found, is the presence or absence.
-
Don't be boring
- the brain can only focus on one thing at a time.
- studies show that a person who is interrupted takes 50 percent longer to accomplish task.
- we don't pay attention to boring things.
- the brain loves hierachy so starting with gist the into the detail.
Brain Wiring
- No two brains are wired the same. No two brains store the same information in same place.
-
