Cranial nerves 9-12
Vagus (CN X)
Motor
GVE
- cardiac muscle
- [Nucleus ambiguous]
SVE (branchial)
- pharynx
- larynx
- [Nucleus ambiguous]
-
Lesion in either will result in absence of gag reflex #
Sensory
GSA
- Meninges
- [spinal trigeminal nucleus]
GVA
- aortic arch
- [Nucleus Solitarius]
Leaves medulla lateral to olive
- emerges from jugular foramen
- Ends = left colic flexure large Intestine
Test
- Palate and uvula deviation when BOTH (CN IX & CN X) damaged
- tested together as functions overlap
Hypoglossal (CNXII)
-
-
-
Lesion (atrophy)
= LMN (ipsilateral) Deviate towards affected side
= UMN (contralateral) Deviate away* from affected side
Glossopharyngeal (CN IX)
Sensory
GVA
- Carotid body
- carotid sinus
- oropharynx (gag reflex)
- [nucleus solitarius]
SVA - Taste (posterior 1/3 tongue)
GSA - Posterior 1/3 tongue (upper pharynx)
- [Spinal trigeminal N] - pain temp
- [Chief sensory N] - discriminative
Motor
SVE (branchial) -
STYLOPHARYNGEUS
GVE - PSNS parotid gland
- [Salivatory nucleus]
- [Nucleus ambiguos]
- LEAVES medulla dorsal to olive
- Passes through jugular foramen
Accessory (Motor) (CNXI)
Innervates [Spinal accessory nucleus]
- trapezius [contralateral]
- sternocleidomastoid [Ispilateral]
-
- Through foramen magnum
- exits jugular foramen
-
