Types of Assessments in the Classroom
Formative
Examples
: entry and exit slips, low-stakes / non-graded quizzes and polls, interview assessments, misconception checks (asking students to explain where exactly their understanding got muddy), or self-assessments
A diagnostic tool for the educator to monitor students' learning style, ability, and understanding of content. They are meant to be quick to use and fit seamlessly within the learning process.
Also allows students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need additional work. It helps educators recognize where students are struggling and address problems accordingly.
Summative
Given periodically to determine at a particular point in time what students know and do not know.
A means to gauge, at a particular point in time, student learning relative to content standards. Generally, these assessments only help in evaluating certain aspects of the learning process.
Examples:
State assessments, end-of-unit chapter tests, semester exams
Summative assessments don’t have to be “strictly” summative (i.e. they can borrow from principles of formative assessment), and they don’t have to exist in the forms of painful exams and tests. Other examples can include things similar to performance assessments: projects and portfolios, performances, and authentic problems for students to solve.
Performance
Performance based assessments measure students' ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit or units of study. Tasks challenge students to use higher-order thinking skills to create a final product or project.
Normally, students are presented with an open-ended question that may produce several different correct answers
Examples:
Presentations, reports, portfolios, performances (such as dramatic), debates, thought exercises
Assessments as learning
actively involves student reflection on learning, monitoring of his/her own progress
is student-driven with teacher guidance
occurs throughout the learning process
Assessments for learning
Can provide the educator with ongoing feedback and allows to: identify at-risk students early, adjust instruction accordingly and immediately, and monitor student progress.
Helps students to learn better
Consists of written and oral feedback to students; consists of teachers, parents, and students reflecting on evidence in class
Assessments of learning
Involves teachers using evidence of student learning to make judgement about student achievements.
provides opportunity to report evidence of achievement related to curricular outcomes
Provides an opportunity to evaluate assessments against criteria based on curriculum outcomes for the pupose of communicating to studens and parents about student achievement

Diagnostic
Happen at the beginning of a unit, lesson, quarter, or period of time.
Identify strengths and areas of improvement for the student
Low-stakes assessments (Usually do not count as a grade)
Act as pre-tests. They help educators see how much information students already know about the learning topic. Diagnosis in this sense means an analysis of the nature or condition of a situation, which is how educators use these such assessments.
A valuable use of a diagnostic pre-test is to give the students an idea of what they will have learned by end of the learning period. When combined with a post test, their score on a pre-test will show students just how much knowledge they have gained.
Examples:
Pre-tests, quizzes, journal entries, thoughts and feelings participation exercises
