Food nutrition labels tell us vital information about the ingredients our food contains so we can make a choice about whether or not we should eat it. Labels normally tell us the number of calories, sugars, fats, saturated fats and salts. If the food label mentions calories, it normally states how many calories are per serving, portion, or 100g of the food, not the whole product.
Food nutrition labels are often colour coded – red means high, amber means medium and green means low. The Reference Intake is the guidance needed to maintain a healthy balanced diet. The % Reference Intake kcal (calories) is also found on the nutrient labels.
