Martin Luther King Jr.
Second child of Martin Luther King Sr. (A pastor), and Alberta Williams King (A former teacher).
Younger Brother: Alfred Daniel Williams, and older sister Christine King
Went to Morehouse College at age 15
Entered Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, and was elected president of his mostly white class
Went to Graduate School at Boston University
Born January 15, 1929
Lived in Montgomery, Alabama during the time of Brown V. Board of Education
December 1, 1955: Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, and was arrested. MLK was the official protest leader and spokesperson for her cause
Participated in the "Birmingham campaign of 1963, and was arrested. Wrote the "Letter From Birmingham Jail" addressed to white men who criticized him
Later worked with other activists to organize "The March on Washington" to emphasize the problems of black Americans (peacefully)
Made his famous "I Have A Dream" speech during this march
Congress later passed the "Voting Rights Act" and the 15th Amendment gave men of all races the right to vote
His speeches and beliefs inspired young minds but also upset many. Many racists were angry with him and his successes
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, by escaped convict and racist, James Earl Ray
His message still inspires people today, and has his own holiday.
W.E.B Dubois
Wanted to understand black America as a whole, studied diversity in Atlanta. Observed racism and white supremacist groups, (KKK)
Wrote, "The Strivings of the Negro People" for the Atlantic Monthly. This was a groundbreaking essay that explained racism to white readers, who had never experienced racism
Taught Economics at the University of Atlanta
Organized the "Niagara Movement" that attempted to bring legal change, in order to make economic and educational opportunities equal for black men and finally women
First black person to get a PhD at Harvard University
Claimed that Booker T. Washington stood for African inferiority
Got a bachelors degree at both Fisk and Harvard. The scholarship he was offered required him to get a bachelors degree there, after he had already gotten one at Fisk
Attended Fisk University among both black and white students
Very good student, only black student in many schools he attended
His book "The Souls of Black Folk" differentiated his beliefs from more Conservative black man, Booker T. Washington
Not only did he believe that white people who believed in racism were wrong, he claimed that they were mentally ill. Decided to explore communism
His family was never the center of his world, was always focused on his work. Was not a very great husband, even when his wife died
There were no more than 50 black people in his home town with over 5,000 citizens
Dubois died on August 27, 1963 in Ghana

Booker T. Washington
Booker hired George Washington Carver to teach agriculture at Tuskegee in 1896
Walked 500 miles to Hampton, and received very high grades at his new school
Was living in Malden, West Virginia. Allowed to go to school after working from 4-9 AM every morning
Booker was 9 years old when he was freed from slavery (at the closing of the Civil War)
His mother worked for their plantation owner, and he didn't know his father (A white man)
