INGLESE - THE MACHINE STOPS, E.M FOSTER
1) 1879 - 1970
11) during this time kuno is transferred to a room near vashiti's
11.1)he comes to belive that the machine is breking down , and tells her cryptycally "the machine stops"
3) each individual now live in isolation below ground in a standar room
12 ) vashiti continues with her life , but eventually defects begin to appear in the machine
12.1) - at first humans accept the deteriorations as the whim of the machine , to which there are now wholly subservient , but the situation continues to deteriorate , as the knowledge of how to repair the machine has been lost
2) the story describes a word in which most of the human lost the ability to lives in the surface of the earth.
6) two main charachetrs : Vashiti and her son kuno live in opposite sides of the word :
vashiti is content of her life --> which , like the inhabitant of the world ,she spends producing and endlessly discussing secondhand ideas
kuno however is a sensualist and rebel and persuases vashiti to endure a journey to his room
4) travel is permitted but is unpompolar and rarely necessary
5) comunication is made via a kind of instant messaging/video conferencing machine with wicht people conduct their only activity:
the sharing of ideas and waht passes for knowledge
7) kumo confides to her that he has visited the surface of the eart without the permission and that saw other humas living outside the world of the machine
7.1) however the machine recaptures him, and he is threatened with homelessness ---> expulsion from the underground environment ad presumed death .
7.2) vashiti dismisses her son's concerns as dangerous madness and returns to her part of the world
8) as time passes , and vashiti continues the routine of her daily life , there are 2 development :
FIRST --> the life support apparatus required to visit the outer world is abolished
SECONDOLY --> technolopoly a kind of religius is re-estabilished ------> in which the machine is the object of worship
8.1) people forget that humans create the machine , and treat it as a mystical entity whose needs supersede their own
9) those don't accept the deity of the machine are viewed as unmechianical and threatened with homelessness
10) the mending apparatus ---> who is the sistem charged with reparing defects that appear in the machine proper, has also failed by this time but concerns about this are dismissed in the context of the supposed omnipotence of the machine itself
13) the machine collapses , bringing civilization down with it
14) kuno comes to Vahiti's ruined room
before they perish , they realise thet humanity and its connection to the natural world are what truly matter
14.1) , and that it will fall to the surface - dwellers who still exist to rebuild the human race and to prevent the mistake of the machine from being repeated
